The 2018 International Olefins and Polyolefins Conference (IOPC) was held in Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province, China March 20-23.  The conference was co-hosted by Chemical Industry Engineering Society of China (CIESC), Townsend Solutions in Houston USA, and Ningbo Science and Technology Association.  It was sponsored by Grace, ExxonMobil, Univation, KBR, MCN, and Polymer Char.

This technology-focused polyolefin conference drew a sizeable crowd of over 300 international guests coming from all over the world.

At the opening ceremony, Ms. Hua Wei, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the Chemical Industry and Engineering Society of China (CIESC) welcomed all guests and made the following statements:

  • Olefin and Polyolefin industry hold an important strategic position in China’s national economy.   With focused planning/development and continued expansions in the past 10 years at the state, provincial, and private levels, the capacities of China’s Olefin and Polyolefin industry are now among the largest in the world.

  • However it was quickly realized the continued technological upgrading and high-end product development are essential for its sustainability.  The IOPC was intended to provide an  authoritative platform for the entire industry so we can collectively think and probe ways to extract the most value out of the supply-chain.  The IOPC, with its short history, has successfully demonstrated that it can effectively integrate the academia, industry R&D, commercial products for subsequent future developments.    Meanwhile CIESC and Ningbo Science and Technology Association may work together to form a “think tank” so many new ideas may be funneled in.  Ms. Hua also mentioned that we should spend time thinking and combing through all options to come up with the direction for the future.

Dr. Clifford Lee, VP Townsend Solutions pointed out that a unique theme of IOPC is to bring about the recognition of  the troika: namely feedstock, polymerization, and products as the core of the entire value chain.

The subsequent three speeches were delivered by Mr. Chen, Chairman, Ningbo Science and Technology Association of Ningbo, Mr. Zhang Yu Ming, President of Sinopec Ningbo Zhenhai Refining and Chemical Co.. and Mr. Su of Ningbo University of Technology.  Essentially they all echoed Ms. Hua’s points and emphasized the importance of broad range collaboration among all branches to move forward to further improve the cost performance ratio.

On March 23 a bus tour was arranged to visit Ningbo University of Technology -a high level model university and  Sinopec Zhenhai Refining & Chemical Co. – one of the largest and most successful refining and chemicals integrated company in China.

The 2018 IOPC was nicely concluded in the early afternoon of March 23.  For more information on the latest technology innovations for olefins and polyolefins, or to learn more about the CIOPC forum contact Cliff Lee at +1 281-582-0155 or clee@townsendsolutions.com.

IOPC brought over 35 presentations by noted industry experts and renowned academic scholars from the following organizations:

We purposefully provided on March 22 three distinct sessions to specifically address each element of the troika.  Successful and simultaneous streamlining of the troika will achieve the most advantaged situation for our industry.

Clifford also mentioned that the IOPC is characterized by a one-day special Polyolefin Technology workshop conducted by four industry experts. This workshop or training course, only at its second year, has gained popularity as a nice refreshing beneficial program prior to IOPC.

Clifford acknowledged all speakers by commenting “ A conference is defined by the caliber of its speakers* and we have a sterling cast!”
